Hey guys, it was great to see you this morning! I know I was a little late and missed out on some of the reading...I just wanted to add something regarding our talk about scriptural perception and interpretation however. I recently had a professor expound upon our tendency to view scripture through our own lenses. Specifically, I see the world through the eyes of a middle aged, white male, living in the developed free world in 2011. In practical application this means that I will never truly be able to understand how someone of a different race, gender, or cultural identity interprets scripture as a product of their experiences. We should be mindful that scripture is God's living word and is not bound by cultural customs. In the story of the prodigal son, the son wished that he had been given his inheritance by his father so that he could leave. Often times people read over this literal writing without any further thought. In reality, the only way for a son to receive his inheritance during that historical time was for the father to die. What the story is really saying is that the son initially told his father that he wished he would die. This carries a far deeper message as we delve into historical transcendence and understand what the individuals of that original culture meant.
As we interpret scripture I find it imperative that we attempt to identify both cultural as well as historical understandings as they apply today. Theology is often accepted as the interpretation of scripture as it relates to the modern reader.
